Games and Good Wishes...

In certain areas of China, it is customary for family and friends to give a piece of cloth to a child in order to stitch together a Bai Jai Bei (One Hundred Good Wishes Quilt).  In the Chinese adoption community, many have carried forward this tradition by asking family and friends to participate.

For your Welcome Home Baby party, place a small card inside the invitations, asking guests to cut two 9x9 inch squares of material to bring to the party.  If you prefer the quilt to have a specific color scheme, be sure to inform guests of this request.

When guests arrive, have them write a good wish on a small note card in a coordinating color scheme.  Place the note card and one fabric square inside a Memory Book (1).  During the party, be sure to take a picture of each guest.  Print the photos in black and white and include them next to the wish and the quilt square.

The second fabric square will be used for the actual quilt.  In the future, while your child is wrapped in her quilt, she will be able to look at her Memory Book and know all the love that surrounds her.

During the party, entertain younger guests by having a set of Chinese yo-yo (2), Chinese Fortune sticks (3) and paper yo-yos (4).  The kids can play while the older guests chat about your family's time in China.

Listen to a mixture of classical string music of European and Chinese descent.  Create this compilation of music by combining your favorite classical music with Xian Qing Sui Yue's "Chinese Sentimental Strings" (Vol. One and Vol. Two) and/ or Liu Tianhu's "Master of Chinese Traditional Music."  Both albums found on itunes.
