Every Bunny Needs Some...

Has it really been a whole month? Where does time go? We would like to thank all of our readers for hanging in there as we took a much needed vacation, as well as took some time to reflect upon the new direction for the company.

In the beginning of Roses and Rhubarbs, Tonya and I (Casey) wanted to merge two different business ideas into one... an Internet-based party planning business with a focus on home-made products. Over the course of the last several months and due to some soul searching, we have decided to refocus the business model to primarily a product- based line.

We are very excited about how Tonya's products have been received in the Internet community -including her dolls, mermaids and soft toys - and she is looking forward to expanding her Internet business to new heights. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us during the last few months.

What's In Your Easter Basket?

Looking for a different idea for your child's Easter basket?

I know we are always trying to think of alternatives to candy.

Why not try a Mermaid theme? We even have a Merman for boys!! One option is to place an adorable Roses and Rhubarbs Mermaid doll in the basket with beach accessories. Roll up a beach towel. Put beach toys in a bucket with a shovel. Sunglasses and Sunscreen. They'll be excited to think summer is right around the corner!

Another option is to place the Mermaid with bath toys like a rubber whale or a swimming sea turtle. Add bubbles and water crayons. They'll have hours of fun in the bath and have a snuggle toy to get warm afterwards.

A Woman's Place is in the Home...

Cater your event to evoke a late 1950s house-warming party. Set up a donut bar using tupperware. Fill one of your handy Macbeth buckets with ice and set out vintage coca-cola glass bottles and pink lemonade bottles. Serve Shirley Temple's with cherries. Bake home-made cookies in the shape of a onsie and decorate to match your party colors. Set out Chex-Mix.

For hot dishes, nothing says June Cleaver like Swedish meatballs on toothpicks. Casserole dishes were wildly popular, such as Tuna and Noodle or Green Bean Casserole. An easier alternative is pigs in a blanket.

For cupcakes holders, use a blue polka dot variety. Alternative cupcake toppers with either a vintage rocking horse and baby pin or a vintage baby print.

And don't forget to serve pickles and ice cream...

Practical Extravagance

In the late 1950s, it was very common for guests to bring practical gifts for the mother-to-be. Simple burp clothes, embroidered onsies, or towels were common staples. As a host, follow tradition by giving a Macbeth bucket. Although they may seem extravagant for a bucket, these colorful, personalized gifts play so many roles in the home, a new mother-to-be will be thrilled with its practicality.

Use the larger size to hold laundry, bath towels, or toys. They can be used to wash cloth diapers or clean up spills on the carpet. The medium size can hold bath essentials or laundry detergent. The smaller size holds cloth pins, hair accessories, or pacifiers. The possibilities are endless. The wonderful part? You can choose any fabric choice for your design, such as a light blue diamond pattern or a vintage nursery rhyme theme. Personalization is also available. Fill the bucket with cute, practical items for the shower.

Also, bring a Radio Flyer wagon indoors for guest to place all of their goodies for the mother-to-be. It will be an easy way for the new parents to tote their gifts home too!

Oh Baby...

Use this darling image from a baby shower card circa 1950 to create a perfect Snips and Snails Baby Shower invitation. Simply order the image from Vintage Bella and take the card to a local Kinko's to copy the image on available note cards.

That's What Boys are Made of...

Channel classic Jackie-O and the late 1950s while throwing your next baby shower. Think classic colors and designs with many tongue-in-check touches for a party that will be sweet, modern and vintage.

For the table, use Carousel Designs basic blue and white striped underlay with a classic Nursery Rhyme fabric in pastel colors. Fill pure white milk-glass vases with pink and blue striped pinwheels from Twirlie Whirlie. Add clear hurricane vases in a variety of heights filled with jacks and marbles. Lean sling shots against vases. Scatter baby blocks around table.

Showers in the late 1950's and early 1960's always included crepe paper traditionally strung from the center of the room outward towards corners. In the center of the crepe paper, the host would tie a large bow. Keep with tradition by hanging modern crepe paper designs from The Gilded Bee. If you have a light fixture in the center of the room, tie crepe paper flowers on to the chandelier. If you do not have a light fixture, simply tie thick ribbon onto the flowers and dangle six or more flowers downwards towards the guests.

Since most parties also included a visit from The Stork, be sure to frame vintage stork images to scatter throughout your home.

Also consider using these vintage fabric letters from The Land of Nod. Do not be fooled by the more feminine details. Many of the fabrics would work well for a boy. You could hang the word "Baby" in your entryway -or- consider hanging the baby's name if known.

Here at Roses and Rhubarbs, we are not fully convinced that the snow or the cold weather will ever go away. However, if we are soon blessed with the sun, we think these sweet sundresses are perfect for Easter.

Invited to a St. Patrick's Day party? Attending a Patty's Day parade? Dress her in her finest with this Janie and Jack green cotton dress and headband. In warmer weather, just add sandals. If you are still battling the cold, add white tights, green or white Mary-Jane's and a green jacket.

Need a fun craft? Make Wooden Leprechauns! Order these six wooden peg people from My Friend Amy's Shop and have your little guests paint them to make their own leprechauns. Supply green paint in various hues, other paint colors, paint brushes, glue, eyes, green and black felt and gold thread or ribbon. Allow the kids to get creative...

A Pot at the End of the Rainbow: Also give each child a small black pot (purchased at Michael's) filled with gold, chocolate coins.

Carnival

Gather your neighborhood together for a Mardi Gras celebration. Dress your little one in an outfit from Crewcuts, including a sparkly belt and shoes with plenty of colorful beads. Match a mask similar to the one from Catnip8.

Need fun activities? Have the children decorate Masks. Supply basic black masks from Michaels along with glitter glue, feathers, beads, roses, lace and other craft supplies.

An addition activity is to decorate Shoe-Box Floats. Have each child decorate a shoe-box to resemble a float. Each child will need a shoe box, construction paper, pipe cleaners, beads, glue, feathers, toys (such as happy meal toys) and other crafting supplies. Have a "shoebox" parade at the end of the party to impress all of the adults...

Be sure to throw lots of beads!!
